Once, standing at a red light at an intersection, I saw a car hit a teenage girl on a bike. Very lightly, just enough to throw her off the bike. She wore a helmet. She flew up in the air and hit a curb with her head. The helmet really made a difference - she had what probably was just a mild concussion. I don't even want to think what would happen to this kid if she didn't have a helmet on.

Imo, it makes sense to use those things. Should Big Brother force them on us? That's a different question.
