Mickey Kaus - A-16: Even cynical New York Times-bashers must be amazed that that is where the paper ran the news of the Sandy Berger criminal investigation. ... I guess they wouldn't want to bump that late-breaking piece on untucked shirttails from the front page. ...

Washington apples are just like any other apple, but grown in Washington.

Parmesan cheese, on the other hand, and by that of course one means parmagianno reggiano, is a special cheese that has been made a certain way for centuries.

Calling Kraft "Parmesan" cheese "Parmesan" is misleading, although I suppose anybody silly enough to be mislead probably doesn't deserve real parmagianno reggiano, but that's another issue entirely.

I don't really have any problem with reserving special names for the real thing, e.g., Vidalia onions are unique. Virginia country style ham is unique. Kentucky bourbon may be awfully similar to Tennessee sipping whisky, but real bourbon only comes from Kentucky, period.
