US setting Australia's policy, says Muslim leader

July 21, 2004 - 5:13PM

Australia's decision to vote against a United Nations resolution calling on Israel to tear down part of its West Bank barrier was another sign that America was setting Australia's foreign policy, a senior Muslim leader said today.

Only Australia, Israel, the US, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau voted against the resolution, which passed late yesterday 150-6.

Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) president Ameer Ali said the vote sent the message to the Muslim community that the government had no sympathy for Palestine.

"It is disheartening," Dr Ali said.

"Israel, America and Australia - these are three important countries that have voted against it."

But he said the vote was not a surprise.

"Of course I expected that to happen because the present government goes all the way with what the Americans say. We don't have independent foreign policy at the moment," he said.

"That is the perception in the community.

"The government has not said anything in favour or in sympathy with the Palestinian people.

"That is the most troubling issue in the Muslim world and as long as that problem remains boiling, the governments that support this American foreign policy will be looked at with disfavour."

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a World Court ruling calling on Israel to tear down part of its West Bank barrier - an unfinished 700km concrete and barbed wire fence built partly on West Bank territory.

In addition to the United States and Israel, Australia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau opposed the resolution.

I don't get it. I thought bush had himself called on Israel to dismantle the barrier?
