re: Sounds interesting...

Back in the 60's - 70's, the far west side of Chicago, the Austin area, was very nice, with some upscale 'hoods. But the slum's were moved steadily west on the power of white flight, block by block, year after year, until the slums were approaching Austin Avenue, the western border of Chicago; eastern border of Oak Park. EVERYONE predicted the re-segregation, white to black, that resulted from white flight would overtake Oak Park, as it had the entire west side of Chicago. And in fact it started to happen.

Along comes one lady with an idea, her name escapes me but I think it was Bonnie something. She sets up a housing referral office, and gets just about everybody with rentals or sales to participate. And what they do is when a black person comes in looking to rent or buy, they will only show/rent them places on the west lily white side of Oak Park. And when white folks come in they only show/rent them places on the east side. They absolutely, 100% discriminated on the basis of race, and they controlled most of the real estate. There was quite an uproar, "this was unconstitutional, this was racist, this was blah blah blah". But remarkably, to my knowledge, no one sued.

And it worked. Instead of being re-segregated, Oak Park became integrated, and is integrated today. It is still a great community, probably better today than it was when I was growing up and there was only one black family in the entire town of 68,000.

PS They also put one way cul-de-sacs (sp?) on all the west side side streets; you could get out of Oak Park by a side street, but you couldn't get in. You could only get in by a main street. I'm not sure that part accomplished anything.
