To see how liberal the NYT times is, Win, I don't have to compare to Fox. Oh no. I just have to compare it the Washington Post, itself a liberal paper, but one that plays the news somewhat straighter and where the headlines can generally be counted on the match the body of the story, instead of being spun against Bush. For example a recent Nagourney (he's one of the worst offenders) report of a NYT/CBS poll trumpeted "Approval for Bush Hits Lowest Mark Ever in June". Except that reading the poll results in the body of the story informed you that Bush's rating had actually risen a point from the previous poll. And so on and so forth. Glenn Reynolds and Mickey Kaus (neither of them particularly conservative, Kaus has announced his intention to vote for Kerry) keep tabs on the way the NYT and the Wapo play stories. Both have "the NYT is at it again" entries as a kind of chorus, it happens so frequently. The Wapo editorialized against the 'Berger Bumble' today. The NYT has yet to manage more than a perfunctory report buried on A10. If you think they would bury the report the same way if Condi Rice was found "inadvertantly" removing classified documents from the Archives (and more than once; they set up a sting) and "losing" some of them, I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn that I'd like to sell you.

Tonight, Win, the NYT provides yet another example of its tireless spin for the Democrats. Here's how the NYT and the WaPo framed the Berger story tonight. Headlines: WP - Archives Staff Was Suspicious of Berger NYT - White House Knew of Inquiry on Aide; Kerry Camp Irked Isn't that cute? The NYT manages to imply that the White House is somehow to blame for not warning Kerry that Berger was under criminal investigation for walking off with highly classified documents from the National Archives. As if it were the White House's duty to do this, instead of Berger's. And they don't even put Berger's name in the headline so the casual reader might assume this is some new White House scandal under discussion, not the ongoing Berger scandal. Whereas the WaPo does straight and quite thorough investigative journalism of how it happened that the National Archives staff became so suspicious of a former National Security Advisor that they actually tagged the documents they gave him so that they wouldn't lose any more of them. I couldn't ask for a clearer example of the NYT's liberal political ax grinding. Right on cue, how nice of them.
