The difference in perception is amazing.

Partisan Economics

Is the US in a recession?
Yes 35%
No 48%

Tuesday July 20, 2004--Overall perceptions of the economy have been improving in recent months, but Republicans and Democrats continue to view the economy from entirely different perspectives. Republicans see a glass that is more than half full while Democrats see one that is almost empty.

Most Democrats (51%) say that the country is still in a recession. However, 71% of Republicans take the opposite view and say the recession is over. Those not affiliated with either major party fall in between those extremes—41% of unaffiliateds say the recession is over and 32% say it is still with us.

The same breakdown can be seen on other economic topics as well—68% of Republicans say the economy is good or excellent. Just 9% of the GOP faithful say the economy is in poor shape. As for Democrats, just 19% say good or excellent while twice as many (37%) say poor.

These trends are nothing new. They were identified in an April survey as well.

It just goes to show what a wicked, ungrateful place this world really is.

It just breaks your heart.
