"Failure to successfully bring a product to market and to expand the product portfolio beyond etch is good and a reason for a BUY rating. NOT, for long term investors. "

SFAM had the best CMP tool. NVLS bought SFAM. Are you suggesting that LRCX should have entered into a bidding war with NVLS for SFAM?

I think it is a good sign when companies stop pouring money down black holes and admit defeat. Of course, I'd prefer they won with a good CMP tool, but if they are getting record revenue and profits in one area and can only be #2 due to IP in CMP that NVLS ownes, then this is a good decision. Sure they could waste resources on trying to be a good #2 and not put those resources to expanding the business in their higher margin products.

NVLS is pretty much flat today so perhaps it is costing them a good deal of money to integrate SFAM? Have they indicated they are getting profits and target GMs yet from CMP?
