While I think Clinton wants Kerry to lose, I think he is really trying to help Berger, who after all was his guy

I doubt it. Clinton has no loyalty, except when it is convenient. There is no reason for him to be loyal to Berger, who has after all aligned himself with Kerry, and a lot of reasons to subtly make Kerry look stupid, which I think his well-publicized amusement has done.

From Clinton's perspective, the whole thing is indeed comic. One of his former subordinates to whom he probably feels no loyalty, does his wife a favor by doing something incredibly dumb.

I'd be laughing, too.

NB: Who's to say that the Clinton camp is not the source of the leak? Plausible, I think, since Clinton admits that he knew of the problem Berger faced. No Dem would ever accuse Billary of doing so. It's a wonderful scenario for a perfect dirty trick.
