Don't worry about the core patents expiring.

There is a scenario which could hurt QCOM. Currently and for the next few years QCOM is still covered by core patents. You want to do CDMA? You have to get a license and then Q makes you agree to sign for the whole pool (some of which are very current). But in a few years you will be able to do CDMA without Q's permission and the other patents are easier to work around. So a start-up company in, say, 2010 might actually be able to promulgate a moderately good CDMA standard and pay QCOM no royalties. But they might have to go it alone since other vendors will have signed agreements with Q.

Thoughts?
