I understand that you have a problem with religion and a big ax to grind.

As to the Washington quote it embodies all that is repugnant to a free people.
"...that he would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government...."

The D. of I. says otherwise.

Noel, lots of speech is harmful, no question about it. Anyone who denies that is a fool. But there's this idea you might want to look into, called "freedom". It's a radical idea that says maybe there are some things that are best left to the decisions of individuals, rather than the ruling elite.

No, this idea has not been fully accepted, even in America. Libel laws are an example, as you mention. There are others.
