Good post from Heinz on our tactics in Iraq: The validity of a strategy or tactic can easily be verified by looking at its rate of success. has launching rockets at alleged 'terrorist safe houses' in Iraq, which somehow ALWAYS seem to manage to kill a number of women and children been a success? have the activities of the insurgency diminished? apparently not, since the insurgents are as active as ever. the main result of these strikes seems to be that even more hatred is fomented. in any event, it's easy to see why. when a foreign power invades your country on what turns out to have been nothing but a flimsy pretext and a bunch of lies and begins to kill your relatives and friends, a certain percentage of the population will take up arms against the invading power and all its surrogates. such insurgents are then ALWAYS, as a rule, classified as 'terrorists' by the invaders. George Washington and his comrades-in-arms also were 'terrorists' in the eyse of the British Crown. from our Western PoV their ideals were certainly loftier than those of the Iraqi insurgents, but the principle, namely taking up arms against an invader, is the same. no doubt the West has to defend itself against fanatical murderers like e.g. OBL and his followers. but the method is all wrong - invading Iraq has done NOTHING to end the conflict - on the contrary, it has intensified it, and made us less safe. what must be tackled are the root causes of the conflict, since that would isolate the fanatics, and make defeating them easy. but that would require some creativity and political courage, characteristics that are evidently not part of our political masters make-up.
