Yep. He hated the what he saw of the country, too. He was fortunate: he had a year of college, and he could type, so he easily got a corporal's bar and landed on staff. Not that he avoided danger: he was in London during the Blitz, for example, and never rotated out, but stuck with Eisenhower throughout the war. But he had it better than the average dogface. He mustered out as a master sergeant, chief of the clerical staff at SHAEF, with a Bronze Star personally pinned on by Eisenhower.
