He took classified drafts of documents which had handwritten notes of gov't officials on them. These are classified documents in and of themselves. It is known he "inadvertently" removed and "inadvertently" destroyed all the drafts of a critique of the govt's precautions during the Millenium terror situation. It's also known he took documents on at least five occasions.

I don't know why anyone would try to defend the theft and destruction of classified materials.

Suppose it were Condi Rice who removed this kind of material and destroyed it. Would you be willing to excuse it then?
