<<< Plenty of people buckle down before then, don't get me wrong. I just mean that I don't think badly of a person who partied hearty in their youth. Maybe it's because I am a Catholic, and believe in forgiveness, rather than a Protestant, who believes in predestination.>>>

I agree with you in this way. I don't care what kind of a person they were in the past. They could even have been an axe murderer - and I mean that. I know that the rest of society could not put up with it, but I could. However, I would have to be absolutely certain that I could not be responsible for that person to harm others again.

Having said that, I have a lot of trouble with someone who can look me in the eye and lie to me - no matter how small the lie.

I know I am not perfect. I don't always know what is right and what is wrong. I have done things that I wish I hadn't done. I don't despise everyone that lie to themselves or to others.

But, I do think the stronger you are, and the smarter you are, you are far less likely to put yourself in a position where you have to lie.

Of course you could always create conundrums where you have to lie for the greater good - those situations of course happens. But it seems to happen more with certain people more than others. It's like the kid with the dog that ran away with the homework - that happens more with some kids than others.

But, getting back to Bush and the National Guard. I don't have any trouble (with certain caveats) with Bush getting away with ducking out on some commitments in his youth. I have trouble basically with his supporters who see nothing wrong with what Bush did but will come down very hard on welfare cheats, immigrants crossing the border to provide us cheap labor, and far less fortunate people that have to do things to fight for their existence.
