There have been thousands of such passages written, it happens every time a Westerner comes into prolonged contact with the Arabs. I would guess the Iraqis are worse than most right now because they were an enslaved population for so long. It's not new. Remember the Children of Israel in the desert, longing for the "fleshpots of Egypt" and blaming Moses for providing only manna?

Arabs, for the most part, just don't think the same way as Europeans or Americans. It's dreadfully unPC to notice; even Chief Wiggles hastens to add "not better or worse, just different". I will be even more unPC. Unrestrained emotionalism and unrestrained acceptance of rumor as fact is a worse way of thinking. Much worse. Because the only conclusion it ever leads to is whom to blame for your troubles, the 'culprit' being always somebody else, never yourself even in part. And that is dreadfully counterproductive. Even those who don't succumb themselves have to deal with the fantastical beliefs of the majority who do, and set themselves mentally at odds with most of their countrymen.
