This is an intellectual war. Terrorism is a manifestation of it. Bush doesn't have the deep thinking ability to deal with it. He's focusing on offense. (Even his choice of offense is questionable.) I joke at times about the U.S. Department of Defense becoming the U.S. Department of Offense. It's true, though, and this route is an excuse for thinking.

I really think Bush doesn't have the humility to deal with the Islamic problem from a defensive perspective. That would require talking "with" people, rather than talking "at" people. The breadth of this ideological/intellectual conflict is so severe that we simply have to return to leadership that has intellectual credentials.

I am reminded of that car, the Corvair. Didn't Ralph Nader say it was "unsafe at any speed"? I'm beginning to think that living in the United States, particularly in congested metropolitan areas, is unsafe--period. I wish I had left 10 years age when I got divorced.
