The security situation is calamitous. Two recent attacks killed nine US marines; an attack on the Iraqi minister of justice killed five bodyguards; bombings and attacks on Iraqi security forces have caused multiple deaths; targets in Falluja have been bombed by the US air force; foreigners have been kidnapped or executed with the aim of driving foreign troops and foreign companies out of Iraq.

This method could be used with equal ease to prove that the crime situation in any populous state was calamitous, and martial law must be declared immediately. After all, New York's police blotter can provide you more murders and kidnappings in a single day than this.

This whole article, like so many from the left, is a conclusion looking for facts to excuse it. They think the thing was not worth doing in the first place, so obviously any price is too high.
