Edwards wasn't running for the Senate again in his home state of NC, as he knew he would be defeated.

Perhaps the public senses that Kerry is a fraud and that Bush, for all his weaknesses, at least will put the country before himself. We can hope.

I think Bush merely needs to keep Kerry on a leash until October. He doesn't need to be ahead of him. In fact, we don't want Bush to be ahead so early in the game. People get tired of the same frontrunner status being reported day-after-day. Bush merely needs keep his fist around Kerry's neck until October. If he is anywhere near Kerry at that time, he will retain the White House.
