You need to look a little harder at recent history. Quite a few have gone before their own people in the last 30 years or so. Moscow and Manila come to mind, and a fair number in Latin America.

Why do you care about the Sudan? How is the genocide in the Sudan any worse or different than the genocides committed by Saddam?

Bacause the genocide in the Sudan is going on right now, and Saddam's worst atrocities took place years ago - many of them when we were on friendly terms with him. Action now in the Sudan could save huge numbers of lives, and it is much easier to build a consensus behind action to prevent genocide than it is to build one behind action to punish genocide.

As far as Iran goes, the country is probably too large for the United States to occupy

Yes, that's what I've been saying. We need strategies other than invasion and occupation, which create as many problems as they solve.
