AB - Epson Scanners - The Epson Perfection 4180 Photo offers a maximum hardware resolution of 4800 x 9600 dpi and 3.4 Dmax along with a built-in adapter that allows for scanning multiple 35mm slides, negatives and 2.25-inch transparencies. In addition to Epson's Easy Photo Fix technology, the scanner offers fully automatic scanning, plus two advanced scanning modes for greater control. Software includes Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.0, ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR, NewSoft Presto! BizCard, as well as the Epson Scan driver and Epson Smart Panel(TM).

The Perfection 4180 Photo will be available in August for an estimated street price of $249 ($199 after a $50 rebate). It also offers an optional automatic document feeder (ADF) for an estimated street price of $149.

The older model costs $600 and the new one out in August seems to cost $199? What on earth are they doing?

BTW do you have any views on scanners for old black and white fils?

Is there the equivalent of Digital ICE for black and white. ICE doesn't work on b&w.

I checked a little more on the invention which we thought might have been part of the DLP systems used in video projectors.

Actually, the inventor of the DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) is Dr. Larry Hornbeck, a Texas Instruments physicist since 1973.
