I'm becoming a convert .......... .......... Your posts today have been excellent, Scott. Great reading about Kerry--particularly by Thomas Oliphant of the Boston Globe. prospect.org My lukewarm support of Kerry is becoming more solid every day. Greatness for him may be on the horizon. But first we have to tell Bush to "shove it" and turn the lights out in the White House when he leaves it. Oliphant really expresses my sentiments about Kerry. We need a person who can work across party lines now. You just have to know in your heart of hearts that Kerry wants to bolt Iraq today but feels he has to coordinate domestic and international opinion for the best way to fix this Bush fiasco. Kerry has been amazing--ever since Iowa. One failed speech by Dean and Kerry moved into the vacuum with aplomb. Kerry's an interesting man. He married a Republican widow. I remember I told you a while back that I went to law school with John Edwards and know Tom Vilsack from grade school. Well, I got another one for you. I once met John Heinz, Teresa's first husband. If Heinz hadn't been killed in 1991, he would be president today. I firmly believe that. He may have been the most popular public official Pennsylvania has ever seen. Teresa's just a White House kind of person. /john

The study found that from the beginning of 2001 through the first four months of 2004, the number of new immigrants who found work in the U.S. was 2.06 million, while the number of native-born and longer-term immigrant workers declined by more than 1.3 million." Low-paying gigs are the new economy. nytimes.com….. We keep harping that most of the US’s meager job growth is in low-paying gigs. Morgan’s Stephen Roach echoes that view in a 7/22 NY Times op-ed piece: "By industry, the leading sources of hiring turn out to be restaurants, temporary hiring agencies and building services. These three categories, which make up only 9.7 percent of total nonfarm payrolls, accounted for 25 percent of the cumulative growth in overall hiring from March to June. Hiring has also accelerated at clothing stores, courier services, hotels, grocery stores, trucking businesses, hospitals, social work agencies, business support companies and providers of personal and laundry services. This group, which makes up 12 percent of the nonfarm work force, accounted for 19 percent of the total growth in business payrolls over the past four months." nytimes.com…
