But these were not founded in Scripture in the way that theocracy is in the Quran. The Crusades were a defensive war in support of the Byzantine Empire and in defense of the Holy Places, not per se a jihad. The Spanish Inquisition only affected nominal Christians, was unusually bloody, and was run by the Crown. Yes, the Pope had territories of his own. They were limited to central Italy. The Divine Right of Kings was not a theocratic proposition, but, in fact, partially established a basis for resistance to the Church when in conflict with secular authority.
