"It's real easy to talk about spitting on people on the internet. But in real life that might have unpleasant consequences for you."

You are correct, I would never speak like that in real life. In real life, rudeness has harsh consequences (at least here in the south, up north they are all uncouth troglodytes).

Just as in real life, the wingers would not constantly barrage people with accusations of being "liberals" (by which they mean wimps, milquetoasts, girly-men) without getting a knuckle sandwich.

The basic problem with the internet as a means of discourse is that, except for very rare circumstances (some of the more colorful shorters and a handful of hypesters), there are no consequences to what you say. There is no way to give someone a knuckle sandwich over the net.

In order to hold your own, and avoid being everybody's bitch, one must be willing to give as good as one gets, and let the bits and bytes fall where they may.
