In my work I see this all the time. Even more common is for people in military service to take jobs in the private sector selling to their old buddies. In government, you see people leaving public office and acting as lobbyists or going into business where connections can be best leveraged. We call it the zipper effect. As for your first instance, I think we need to find ways to integrate our interest with the rest of the world, without giving up our ability to define and assert our interests. Its a fine line sometimes. I also think we need to be more vigilant when we are penetrated by foreign services and intelligence agencies -- this seems to happen with Israel.
