Grupo Mexico Miners Extend Strike Deadline To Aug 10
Dow Jones

Monday July 26, 5:31 PM EDT

MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)--Workers at Mexican copper mining company Grupo Mexico's (GMEXICO.MX) Cananea mining complex extended their strike deadline Monday to Aug. 10, while a walkout at its La Caridad complex entered a third week.

A spokeswoman for the National Mining, Metallurgical and Similar Workers Union said that while workers at Cananea continued negotiating, workers at La Caridad maintained their work stoppage.

Both La Caridad and Cananea are located in the northwestern state of Sonora, across the border from Arizona.

La Caridad, which has a mine, a smelter and a refinery, produces 140,000 tons a year of copper in concentrates and about 250,000 metric tons of refined copper.

Workers there voted Friday to maintain the strike that began July 12, despite a ruling against the strike by labor authorities.

The miners allege the company violated a number of conditions in the collective contract, including profit-sharing. Grupo Mexico says it will share this year's profits in 2005, according to law, but had no profits in 2003.

About 100 workers at a lime plant, also in Sonora, went on strike Friday, while zinc refinery workers in San Luis Potosi state joined those of Cananea in staying at work while negotiations continue.

Cananea, Grupo Mexico's largest mine, produces around 140,000 metric tons a year of copper content in concentrates, and has an SXEW facility that produces 50,000 tons a year of refined copper.
