Mostly, I feel as if I do not know enough about it to judge why we have taken this stance.

You can read up on what leading neocons - Daniel Pipes, for example - say about the MEK. They don't officially speak for the Pentagon, but close enough.

Clearly it is awkward, but also, clearly, anomalous.

You can say that again. It is quite at odds with the official U.S. position on terrorism, harboring terrorists, etc. I doubt the State Department is pleased.
