I think most people would agree that the Civil War was not about Slavery especially those in Federal Uniforms and Confederate Uniforms. However in Lincoln's mind and evidenced by his writings, about halfway through and in the minds of most of the historians that is what it was about. Thats why there are such various views on the causes of the Civil War. IMO the real cause was the recognition by the Federals that there was a lot of money to be taken in the South in taxes to be paid out as subsidies to northern industrial businesses. Thats what it was really all about. Its always about either taxes, money or power. When draft riots broke in New York city and other cities in the North, blacks were violently attacked. Northerners in general were not anti-slavery. Slaves were not an economic interest in the North due to winter weather conditions and down time on farms. In the North slaves were primarily domesteic servants. In the south with temperate weather conditions in the winter, there was always work to be done.
