Well I don't think he did those things anyways. Why would a swift boat captain be far inland, leave his vessel with his crew and burn a village. Thats something an army unit might do. He answered the question yes, yes with an explanation. His answer was yes, yes. Is it punishable in the United States if he was only following orders? You bet it is. An order to do such things to whom you know to be innocent civilians is known as an unlawful order. The German High Command who were accussed of war crimes at Nuremburg never said they didn't do it. They all said they were following orders. The court ruled that such order are illegal and not to be followed, so followinng orders is no excuse.

I think the important thing about Kerry's post-Vietnam activities are:

(1) he came to realize the war could not be won;
(2) he came to realize it was not a just war; and
(3) he did everything he could to end the war and bring our soldiers home with all their appendages still attached.

That is why I think he is the right man for the time. The Iraq War cannot be won; the Iraq War is not a just war; and somebody needs to stop the meaningless deaths of our soldiers.

Kerry is not campaigning as somebody who will pull the plug and stop the bleeding ... I guess that is necessary to get elected.

But I doubt that he has changed so much during the past thirty-odd years that he has forgotten the words he once spoke in the US Congress:

"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"
