UPDATE - Varian Semiconductor posts higher profit

LOS ANGELES, July 29 (Reuters) - Varian Semiconductor Equipment Inc. (NasdaqNM:VSEA - News) on Thursday reported a higher quarterly profit, citing improved sales of its tools to prepare semiconductor wafers for production.

The Gloucester, Massachusetts-based company reported a third-quarter profit of $19.3 million, or 52 cents a share, up from a year-earlier profit of $1.4 million, or 4 cents a share.

Third-quarter revenue rose to $146.1 million from $82.8 million.

Varian said it expects fourth-quarter revenue of between $147 million and $157 million, while earnings per share are expected to range from 58 cents to 66 cents.

For the third quarter, analysts on average had expected the company to post earnings of 51 cents a share, while for the fourth quarter, they are projecting earnings per share of 60 cents and revenues of about $157 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
