We have a lot more time to develop alternative sources of energy than we think, though we are doing an incredibly poor job of it.

Unless somebody makes an incredible breakthrough-what is gravity, for instance-I don't expect any "new new" method for using energy to appear. It is almost guaranteed it won't happen though a "Government effort"-the principals of the A-bomb were known before the Manhatten project started.

So what will happen is what always happens. When the price of oil goes up, engineering solutions will be used. And they won't be really pushed by private enterprise until they are profitable.

I wish the Government would stay out of it. But I know they will muck about with it.
