I just learned recently that the missionaries who went to Hawaii to convert the savages wound up owning most of it. That can't help but make people suspicious of religion.

I guess you never read Mitchener's "Hawaii." The Missionaries went to Hawaii to do good, and they did very well. :>) The Churches here are full of Polynesians. The Missionaries hit here at a very good time. The locals were demoralized and ready for a change.

The Royalty rewarded the newbies with land, but the real difference was the same as we still see on the mainland. The immigrants were willing to work, and the locals weren't. Honolulu looks like New England. Stone Churches everywhere.

When I first got here I went to a U/U church looking for some kindred spirits. It was full of seculars, all right. But they were so far left they squeaked. I gave it up and made my friends among the dancers. Nice people, and they we stay off religion and politics.

I save my rants for here.

I used to be rabid about religion. I grew more tolerant when I spent a lot of time dancing with evangelicals.
