Chris Matthews, a commentator not known for leaning to the right, commented last night that Edwards appears to have been chosed more with an eye on the campaign and election than as a possible successor to the president.

My sense was Matthews thinks Edwards was the expedient choice, who was chosen because he's a good campaigner.

He's a nice guy, but should he be a heartbeat away from the Presidency?
