The silly-minded American phenomenon of pseudo-populism is based on the pure "feel-good" ignorance of second guessing.

Those who CAN, LEAD. Those who CANNOT become Blowhard Bill O'Reilly. Every quarter of a century or so the public gets lazy and sells out to the pseudo-populists. Not enough to actually elect them (pseudo-populists are thoroughly AFRAID of holding office) but enough to damage an era.

So each PARTY, in turn, adopts something from these acolytes of ignorance: BobDole's Disease among Senate Republicans is one recent example. Longism in the 30's was an example for Democrats.

We will destroy the domestic enemy for good in 2004. There's no choice. But America's strange rite of pseudo-populism will continue to wax and wane forever...
