Of course, but not just Iraq's oil. The oil reserves of all the Persian Gulf countries are vital to the world economy. Much too vital to allow a blood-thirsty tyrant bent on dominating the region.

Note: Do not misinterpret what I just said to imply that this the only reason for our involvement in Iraq.

most of Afghanistan has been essentially under the control of warlords, many of whom make their living from the narcotics trade for literally thousands of years. However, with the help of allies, we are endeavoring to help a modern Afghan government emerge. I'm sure you don't expect Afghanistan to resemble Massachussets, say, only two years after the Taliban were overthrown.
