How does this differ from what Bush says? Iraq is a real mess and will probably be a black hole of funds and resources. Even under the best conditions it would take 20 years or so to fix it (and that would require at least 5-years of iron fisted benevolent dictatorship). Frankly I don't see that happening. Nobody has the political muscle to plan an commit to a 20-year occupation, less to a forceful restructuring. So might as well pull out.

If either Kerry or Bush were sincere (or had a clue) about what to do about Iraq, they would declare a plan along with time tables and if that plan would fail, they'd agree to cut losses and leave. Instead both are making vague open ended promises like "getting the job done". Exactly what is this "job" and how long would it take to get it done? Neither one will define it and both sides claim to stick with as long as it takes.

In software engineering there is a well known rule: the more time and resources a project is given, the longer and costlier its completion will be.
