I personally define evil as consciously and deliberately doing that which you know to be morally wrong. I think evil is a volitional act by volitional individuals. To use a term that has a peculiar meaning in the social sciences, agency, human beings are moral agents. It seems to me to be completely beside the point whether a devout Islamist is true to his own moral beliefs or not.
