could i ask you if you saw any civilians killed, any hooches burned, any livestock slaughtered by troops, coco palms cut down, irrigation systems destroyed?

Civilians. Yes. The major inhabitants of the central highlands, outside the cities, were some 1-1.5 million Montagnards. It was routine for NVA troops to slaughter Montagnard tribesmen and their families, destroy by fire their beautiful hand built long houses, and steal their livestock.

Not many palms in the mountains. Most of the trees have been removed now and replaced with coffee.

irrigation systems destroyed? I don't recall any sophisticated irrigation in the border areas. The water supply at SF border camps was usually a well inside the camp. The local civilians got water from springs, streams, rivers and the few lakes. The irrigation systems were primitive and small...feeding small gardens.

that's a bit surprising, when you say you saw no atrocities

Why do you find that surprising? Where were you and what did you see?

I saw some pretty rough stuff as I said before. But war is a fight to the death and a helluva lot of the killing took place in the mountains. It got brutal at times but I saw nothing by US troops that was not within acceptable and defined rules for war. I did witness NVA atrocities as outlined above.
