McNamara in "The Fog of War" adds much to the discussion and how Johnson's forcefull personality made it hard to disagree with him. Also the Bay of Tonkin incident is fascinating in that the 'real attack' was called false and visa versa. Tuchman confirms some of McNamara's insights. She sees John Foster Dulles as a force in setting up the Cold War Paranoia toward Viet Nam early on--namely that the Viet Namese were truly in bed with the Chinese Communists and Russians rather than using them to get their independence.
