mish, On mutual funds, the guy has a point for the large crap funds. He totally misses the boat on China funds, India funds, Intl. small and mid cap funds, Japanese small cap funds, Intl. bond funds, small bio and med funds, etc. The facts are, if you want to mimic the large indices, you should buy an ETF or a very cheap no-load fund. If, however, you want to make money, there are lots of mutual funds out there that do that. True, it takes a bit of work, but it's worth it.

ETFs simply don't cut it in the small and mid cap arenas, where differentiation of return is huge. They pretty much don't exist in the small and mid cap intl. area. And they offer nothing in the way of escaping the dollar. You don't escape dollar exposure by buying an ETF loaded with Nestle and Novartis and Toyota.
