I guess that depends on who you ask about it. Just from a logical point of view my guess is they hunted them with bows and arrows for centuries. Also I have read accounts of "cowboys" systematically slaughtering herds and leaving them to rot. Was that made up? Maybe, kind of hard to tell at this point. By and large by all accounts the settlers were not the best of neighbors to the Natives who were here first and the tradition of running roughshod over others has continued unfettered.
