With the exception of the abolitionists, most Christian denominations supported or at least tolerated slavery for centuries. Many fundamentalist types believed with great passion that black enslavement was ordained by their interpretation of the bible. The current idiocy of many fundamentalist Christians and especially warmongering Christian Zionists like Falwell and Robertson should not surprise anyone who has studied history.
