LB, it turns out that private credit bureaus and such know more about us than the government. And at least we can fire the government every few years. A national ID card with encoded biometrics coupled with a secure government run database will assure positive instant identification of anybody in the US by local and national law enforcement: you stick the card and your hand in a small portable wireless box and in seconds you have positive ID. We do have plenty of local cops to enforce this. The only problem I see is that the millions of illegal aliens will be instantly exposed, and illegal immigration will instantly disappear. My understanding is that lots of people on both sides don't like that. But sooner of later we need to solve that problem too. My guess is that we will wait for the next large scale catastrophe before acting.
