The politically sensible thing for the Dems to do would be what Kerry tried to do in his speech - declare that the Dems differ only in methods, not goals, politics ends at the border, much as the two parties did in the Cold War. But the majority of the delegates suffered from Moore's disease, and Kerry tried to have it both ways, supporting Bush while calling him a liar, supporting the war in Iraq while caling in unncecessary, supporting the campaign against al Qaeda while blowing Moore a kiss by bashing the Saudi Royals and implying that Bush has ulterior motives for all his policies, etc.

So it was really a big Kerry waffle, all dressed up with macho "reporting for duty" ribbons.

If Kerry can't get a bounce from his own scripted convention, complete with rapturous reporting, how can the get a bounce from the Republican convention and the last part of the campaign, the only part most people pay any attention to?
