Kerry has rock solid support in more states than Bush has rock solid support in. Kerry has over 200 electoral votes solid, and Bush about 160. The batttleground states are all that matter. As of right now, Kerry would win the election despite national poll numbers. However it will be a fierce fight, especially for Florida, West Virginia, Ohio, Arizona and Missouri which will decide the election. A few others might be in play as well. It is also possible that if Bush surges, the election could end in a tie. God help us.
