I guess I see the scientific progress more evolutionary than fundamentally different in past times. I credit the increasing rate of achievements to communications technology more than anything else.

Agreed. I am not denying the value of science. But for every scientific good that you mention I can cite an evil use for it. Never before, for example, have we been able to blow up the entire planet out of existence. What worries me is that the rate of scientific progress has not been matched by the rate of progress in humanities. More troublesome is that while it takes little effort to gain access to and use the means of destruction, it is considerably harder and less likely for a person to achieve enlightenment. This imbalance is very worrisome.
