Ridge made a comment yesterday that got my attention but no reporters at least not yet. He said that thousands of radiological detectors have recently been emplaced and thousands more are on order.

It doesn't take more than 60 lbs. of HEU, a guy who can download and read plans, a machine shop, and a technical jack-of-all trades to build a bomb similar to the one that hit Hiroshima. It's the "gun" type of nuke, quite crude when compared to more modern nuclear weapons, but still very deadly.

Set off such a bomb in NYC, and you'll see trillions in consequential damage. And we know OBL think he can get the US to capitulate with two or three hits of this magnitude.

If it is entombed in lead, how will the radioactivity sensors detect it?

This was shocking to find out.

"Thousands of radiological detectors" could explain the funny black boxes I have been seeing.

I have a client who works for airport security, she says she thinks they're using them now that the terror alert has been raised. But she works in dispatch, not at the checkpoints.

Her soon to be ex worked at the checkpoints for a while. He is loony, but no criminal record (at the time, now he's got a phone threats conviction). Knowing that my safety depends on people like him makes me prefer to drive rather than fly. She refuses to fly.
