Stan, I'm the only user on my XP pc too, but had two other users set up - so needed to select a user when booting up. Your post reminded me to look into reestablishing simplicity. I deleted the two users not needed and voila, on the next boot no selection of user was required. To delete a user go to 'control panel' > 'user accounts'.
