I've heard Vietnam vets describe the same type of superficial wounds received while there, but they would have been embarrassed to ask their commanding officer to submit the request for a medal. Instead they flicked away the tiny piece of metal & forgot about it. Kerry had his political gameplan in place & had no qualms whatsoever about taking the medals for 3 scrapes. He admitted to a Boston reporter that the so-called wounds never caused him to lose one day of service.
