Saddam Hussein consistently and repeatedly has refused to abide by his obligations to disarm under international supervision, as required in the 1991 Gulf War cease-fire agreement and succeeding United Nations resolutions. If that agreement and those resolutions are to mean anything, they must be enforced.

Enforcing the resolutions does not require a so-called "smoking gun." Nor does it require an imminent Iraqi threat to the United States, or international approval before the United States and its allies may take further military action to enforce Iraq's international obligations.

We've been engaged with Saddam since 1990 and had no real choice but to remain engaged as long as he remained in power.

I have no doubt that the military experts in the Pentagon advised the White House against the timing of the Iraq adventure.

The only objections I recall hearing from Pentagon sources is that some wanted a bigger Iraq invasion force.

you can never usher in a democracy in a Muslim country. They are ruled by the Shariat and not by the people. It is like having the US ruled by the letter of the Bible.

Turkey made the transition to democracy, though they've had some rough times. So Muslims are not culturally incapable of developing democratic societies.

Other cultures which had been authoritarian have also moved to democracy - Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, most of Latin America.
