ROME (AFX) - Italian lawmakers approved a government proposal aimed at cutting 24 bln eur from the 2005 budget to respect European Union deficit limits

The cabinet approved the plan last week. Comprising 17 bln eur in spending cuts and 7 bln eur in extra revenues, the measures are part of the government's 2005-2008 economic programme and aim to limit the budget deficit to 2.7 pct of GDP next year

Details will not be known until September at the earliest, however

Opposition parties expressed scepticism at the plan. Luciano Violante, leader of the Democrats of the Left, said: "We cannot judge ... We do not know how this money will be taken from Italians."
